Summary: The Substance Abuse Counselor functions as the primary drug and alcohol counselor to a caseload of clients, conducting substance abuse assessments, preparing and presenting group psycho-educational sessions and facilitating group/individual counseling sessions while providing support to the entire client population in a social model residential treatment setting.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and group counseling services to primarily American Indians in a residential treatment setting
  • Implement client assessments and treatment plans, coordinating care with Case Managers to assist clients in accessing supportive services including those related to health, Life Skills, social services and the criminal justice system
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation in electronic health record system, assuring that the files are accurate in reflecting weekly progress and include notes, updated assessments, treatment plans, and documentation of referrals for continuity of care of clients
  • Manage and maintain client case files and complete all required documentation for data reporting systems and database requirements
  • Coordinate and facilitate individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, drug and alcohol education, wellness, and risk reduction education within a clinical team environment

Personal and Professional Qualifications:

  • At least two years of Drug and Alcohol Abuse counseling experience, preferably in the American Indian community
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the American Indian community and various tribal backgrounds
  • Excellent individual and group counseling skills and able to work as a team
  • Certification as a substance abuse counselor is desirable. If not certified must be registered and enrolled in an approved school. Must obtain certification within two years of employment
  • If in recovery, three (3) or more years of continuous sobriety required
  • Must have valid California Driver’s License
  • Must meet standards of character under PL 101-630, section 408, Character Investigation, subsection (a) and PL 101-647, section 231, Requirement for Background Check, subsection (c), and agree that employer can contact the last two employers, the sex abuse detective division of local law enforcement and Child Protective Services of the last two counties in which the person has lived or worked to inquire as to the suitability of the person to work with children
  • Experience: Substance Abuse Counseling: 2 years
