Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Prevention Educator provides prevention services including preparing prevention education materials for and/or presenting programs to schools, community groups and organizations for both adult and youth populations, organizing and facilitating relevant activities and events, collecting local data through surveys or other assessments, and increasing overall community awareness about prevention issues.


  • Minimum of a BS or BA degree in Psychology, Social Science, or related field
  • Unrestricted CA Driver’s License and proof of auto insurance
  • Must be able to travel to off-site and satellite locations
  • Experience providing alcohol and other drug prevention services required; understanding of Rx misuse is a plus
  • Ability to work collaboratively with community leaders, members, agencies, and stakeholders
  • Ability to organize and facilitate community events and/or activities
  • Ability to conduct presentations in community and/or school-based settings
  • Bi-lingual Spanish a plus
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Knowledge about or the ability to quickly learn community and agency resources 
  • Culturally sensitive and able to work with a multicultural client/customer population
  • Ability to work as part of a team and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Ability to work autonomously and demonstrate flexibility. 
  • Ability to work in a non-judgmental manner and foster positive growth/outcomes
  • Proficient in common word processing, database software applications; ability to learn new computer applications
  • Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan fingerprinting) prior to beginning employment

Responsibilities/ Essential Functions:

  • In collaboration with the prevention team, identify, connect with, and develop relationships with community leaders, members, agencies, and stakeholders to create opportunities to  increase community awareness of substance-related risks
  • Provide education within the community regarding substance-related risks and local trends through presentations and/or dissemination of local data
  • Develop, organize, and implement relevant community prevention activities and/or outreach efforts
  • Develop and disseminate materials, including fact sheets, flyers, media messages, and/or press releases, to increase awareness or to publicize/promote activities and/or campaigns
  • As needed to support program activities, actively engage with community to conduct surveys, assessments, focus groups, and/or key informant interviews to identify local concerns/conditions related to substance misuse and abuse
  • Maintain relevant social media presence; utilize appropriate social media platforms to disseminate prevention information and engage the community in prevention efforts
  • Draft and/or contribute to reports as required by agency policy and/or grant funding
  • Comply with all agency and program documentation requirements.
  • Provide, along with the Program Director, in-service training for staff and volunteers as needed
  • Attend staff meetings; act as agency representative at community, County, and collaborative meetings and participate in coalition-wide activities as appropriate
  • Position may require working some evening hours as needed
  • Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned by the Program Director
