The Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley is a 501(c)3, nonprofit, community health clinic, located in San Jose, California. Besides having a highly talented medical and dental department, the Indian Health Center also has an outstanding counseling department, community wellness center and WIC (Women Infants and Children) department.  We are seeking a Substance Use Treatment Specialist to join our Counseling Team!

The Substance Use Treatment Specialist provides the 12-Core functions of counseling services including: orientation, intake, assessment, crisis intervention, plan development, case management, documentation, client education, individual and group services, discharge planning, outreach and referrals and recovery services. This is a _100_% contract-funded position with an anticipated grant end date of _6/30/18_. Although the grant period expires on that date, this contract is renewed annually. However, you should be aware that your employment as a staff employee is at will and may be terminated by you or IHCSCV at any time regardless of the end of the contract


  • Conducts biopsychosocial assessments and evaluation, gathers appropriate information to develop treatment plans in collaboration with clients utilizing SMART (specific, measurable, assignable, realistic, time-related) short and long term goals for outpatient services to a caseload of 30 ongoing, and 120 dynamic clients
  • Conduct 2 outpatient process groups (includes one, 1.5-hour psycho-education group, and a one Relapse Prevention group; may include evenings)
  • Attend weekly group supervision/treatment planning sessions with clinical staff as part of a comprehensive treatment team, contributing to a positive departmental environment
  • Attend weekly individual supervision sessions with the Clinical Supervisor, or Program Supervisor.
  • Utilize clinical supervision to develop and perfect intervention skills, documentation and strategies
  • Maintain proper charting with signature and date documenting treatment sessions per county requirements, incident reports, review treatment plans and updates as required
  • Adhere to mandated reporting laws
  • Maintain strictest confidentiality
  • Maintain professional boundaries with SUTS population. Must be able to follow and enforce program guidelines and work as a team member
  • Knowledge of co-occurring disorders, interventions, and referral process
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Counseling Director



  • Associate of Arts degree in behavioral science, social science or related field preferred
  • High school diploma required
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in the substance abuse/relapse prevention treatment field (some recovery experience may substitute)
  • An individual in recovery from alcohol or other drugs will have a minimum of 5 years of current continuous recovery
  • Certification in substance abuse/relapse prevention i.e., CADC
  • Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients.  Depending on client needs, specialized language skills may be required for this position
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - Intern registration with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences or registration as a Registered Recovery Worker (RRW) or Registered Recover Student (RRS) intern or completion of CADC certification
  • Knowledge of current treatment modalities in the substance abuse field, (i.e., stages of change, ASAM dimensions and 12-Core Functions)
  • Knowledge of and ability to relate to the American Indian community and other minority populations
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to establish and maintain professional relationships with others
  • Ability to function independently and as a clinical team member within diverse environments as well as a diverse staff composition
  • Ability to carry out all responsibilities in an honest, ethical and professional manner and demonstrate good judgment
  • Interest and commitment to the mission of the Indian Health Center
  • Valid California Driver's License and automobile insurance
