HAART Oakland is hiring a substance use disorder (SUD) counselor. The ideal candidate has experience:

  • working with diverse and underserved populations in an outpatient setting
  • providing individual counseling and case management
  • addressing issues related to mental health, co-occurring disorders and criminal justice involvement OR an interest in enhancing their counseling skills by working with clients to address these issues

HAART Oakland strives to create a safe, structured environment that offers a trustworthy, reliable path toward recovery and health for individuals struggling with opioid use disorders. HAART staff works with clients to reduce harm both to self and others. Every step that reduces harm is a step toward health, wellbeing and recovery. In this position, counselors gain invaluable experience working with a diverse population in a harm reduction and trauma-informed treatment setting as they help clients navigate systems and obtain needed services to improve their lives. 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide substance use disorder counseling and case management to approximately 40-45 clients
  • Independently maintain timely compliance with the requirements of state, federal, and local licensing and accreditation agencies
  • Participate in quality assurance reviews and clinical supervision, performance improvement activities and continuing education as needed
  • Serve as an advocate and liaison with other SUD treatment providers, primary and mental health services, social service agencies and the criminal justice system to maintain a continuum of care for HAART patients


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Certified, or the ability to become certified, to work in a licensed SUD program as a certified SUD counselor; LMFTs or LCSWs. Associate MFTs & CSWs are encouraged to apply. Supervision hours may be obtained here.
  • Computer proficiency, including the ability to quickly learn and use new software programs
  • Experience with and ability to work with high-risk and diverse populations
  • One year of experience in the substance use disorder field or providing individual or group therapy
  • Bachelor’s degree or certification or licensure in the substance use disorder or behavioral health care field is preferred, but not required upon hire

HAART Oakland is a harm reduction-based nonprofit clinic providing treatment to opioid-dependent adults in Alameda County since 1979. We provide medication-assisted treatment including buprenorphine and methadone maintenance treatment, long-term detoxification, overdose prevention and professional counseling services.
